Hawaii is beautiful, but Bowen is sublime. This place rocks! I am a convert!
I love the 4 SEASONS…the different moods, views, smells, sounds…it’s all GOOD!
Tunstall Bay is pristine, the ocean clean, the beach spotless for the most part.
The air smells good, the neighbors are conscientious, eco-friendly and QUIET.
What’s NOT to love about this place.  Happiness is some time spent on the island!

Enjoying the surf, sand, sun, food, trade winds in Hawaii.  In the water at any time of day…justcame from a night swim in the resort pool – cool off for sleep time, and check out the starsin the sky, with palm trees shadowing the blackness!  This is a photo op kind of place…and I’vejust begun.  Tomorrow, Haleakala Volcano…

The water is SO clear you can see the turtles swimming by.  Exquisite blues and greens, turquoise and aqua.This is Molokini, a volcanic crater where the diving and snorkelling is excellent.  This taken from the beach at
Makena, which is one of the nicest beaches on the island.

This is the beach at the Mana Kai, and it goes South for miles.  Some of the nicest resorts can be found here in Wailea and Makena.

Makena beach off in the distance.  Photo taken from lava fields near ‘Kanahena’, on the narrow road
to La Perouse Bay…a barren landscape of lava fields as seen in the forefront.  Makena shines like a jewel to
the North of this.

Beautiful Makena Beach…sloping, with good surf…and passing turtles!  Exquisite place!

Truly not crowded for a Saturday…

A little bit of paradise?  Sure looks different from the BALTIC!

The homes near the beach are quite hidden and private, and have little doors leading out onto the dunes  (with Intercoms,

no less) !

FROM SEA LEVEL HALEAKALA rises 10,023 feet into the sky.  We ascended Haleakala mid-morning into the dizzying heights of this broad based dormant volcano…a 37 mile journey on an immaculately maintained highway, up up up into low lying mist and cloud. Once past the visitor’s centre where you pay a $10.00 visitor’s fee (cheap considering the thrill) the air thins out, the cloud lies below you and the views grow ever more spectacular. The Park has numerous walking trails that lead you down into the eroded bowl of the volcano where numerous ‘cinder cones’ sit surrounded by hillsides of amazing volcanic rock and scree…photos speak louder than words.  FYI…

Dimensions of Haleakala Crater:
Area = 19 square miles
Length = 7.5 miles long
Width = 2.5 miles wide
Depth = approximately 3,000 feet,
Circumference = 21 miles

…Back from Denmark, Latvia – photos in the offing
Happy September! Back to blogging!
Here’s one to keep us happy!
Latvia! Her name was Veronika and she sang Polish and Latvian
folk songs in the light drizzle of a Jurmala on the Baltic day.

This is one of my favorite photos from the spectacle!  Taken with my iPhone – I have not altered color here!

This is another favorite !  Air paintings, don’t you think!  A sky symphony,  an aerial ballet!  Stunning!

Sun dries washing on the line
Sea envelops you in the dappled light
Garden delights your watchful eye
Stars dot the blackest sky

Flowers scent the cool night air
Quiet breathes a lullaby
Sleep is very close at hand
Dreams roll in upon the shore

IMG_3710Summer in the City

      Lovin’ Spoonful

Hot town, summer in the city
Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty
Been down, isn’t it a pity
Doesn’t seem to be a shadow in the city

All around, people looking half dead
Walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head

But at night it’s a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come-on, come-on and dance all night
Despite the heat it’ll be alright

And babe, don’t you know it’s a pity
That the days can’t be like the nights
In the summer, in the city
In the summer, in the city

Cool town, evening in the city
Dressing so fine and looking so pretty
Cool cat, looking for a kitty
Gonna look in every corner of the city
Till I’m wheezing like a bus stop
Running up the stairs, gonna meet you on the rooftop

But at night it’s a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come-on, come-on and dance all night
Despite the heat it’ll be alright

And babe, don’t you know it’s a pity
That the days can’t be like the nights
In the summer, in the city
In the summer, in the city

There is nothing more wonderful than taking photos of what’s going on in my own backyard, in this case the Bowen Island backyard. I love the Seasons for that reason. It always looks different.

CAMINO SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA – VIA DE PLATA,  Camino Sanabrés, España On May 23rd, 2012, we began our adventure in Spain.  We decided that for better or worse, in sickness or health, we would complete a journey that would test our physical and mental beings!  As you can imagine the journey had its ups and downs in all senses.  Nevertheless, it was the trip of a lifetime and despite the fact that I was only carrying my Canon PowerShot and my iPhone, I am not unhappy with the photos I was able to take.  I made a conscious decision NOT to cart around the digital camera because I wanted to keep my carrying to a minimum…I’m glad I made that choice. To commemorate this trip just a year ago, I include some shots that give a good picture of the sights we saw!

I have been taking photos for what seems my whole life. I was given a Kodak Brownie as a child and I think I’ve just about had every kind of camera…I now have a Canon Rebel T2i and of course I have the camera on my iPhone…this year is my year for improving my relationship with my camera…I am going to reacquaint myself with the basics of photography, especially with digital photography. Time to fall in love again, to give the relationship the kind of attention it is due. For starters, I am taking BASIC INTENSIVE WEEKEND WORKSHOP this weekend with Vancouver Photo Workshops, a nice studio on 7th Avenue, a walk away from home. The sun is shining, my camera batteries are charged and I’m excited to have a refresher course which hopefully will improve my photos so that I can put the ‘exhibition’ dream into action. I’ll be commenting on the class soon!

IMG_6024_2 Lynne’s gift of orchids… The photography course turned me upside down…I didn’t run out with my camera as I had anticipated, but basically left my camera in its case and experienced six weeks+ of camera shyness, a total shut down which is most rare…I re-read the notes, turned to sources on the internet…I didn’t look at my old photos – I seemed to be frozen.

Was I percolating? I certainly hope so…

  1. Avi – I see controlled relationship with background into simple shapes. Love these 2 photos. People are so much harder to me..but your lighting and great relationship made good clarity. Congrats, lovely!
